Back Alley Sound's all about keeping it PGH & DIY
By:
Emily Plazek - Millaze

Welcome Back Alley Sound to the MVMT! Another band performing at the 3rd Annual Indie-Rockfest this Saturday, these guys were actually created 2 days before last year's Indie-Rockfest, with that show being their debut into the world. Let's dive into more of what they've been up to this past year, and what we can expect from them all around Pittsburgh in the future:

Who is Back Alley Sound?

We’re a full band hip-hop outfit from Pittsburgh, PA. Our first show was actually at Indie-Rockfest last year. Some crazy circumstances leading up to the show led to a handful of us writing and learning an entire original set 48 hours before the show. In the months following, we kept jamming and writing together, solidified our lineup, and started playing locally as much as possible.

What's the best part of being an indie musician?

Having no boundaries creatively. Each member of Back Alley Sound has an equally extravagant imagination so we really get to explore new worlds of ideas. Music, art, events, apparel, etc. As an indie band we get to explore all of it.

What are some of your struggles as an indie band?

One of our biggest struggles right now is still being in the early stages of getting our music out there. We’re currently in the process of recording our first EP, so until we’re able to release it, we can only show people videos of our live shows. We’ve tried to use that to our advantage though to get our live show as tight as we can.

Any advice for up-and-coming bands?

Show love, journey inward, stay sharp, spread wealth, think local, move mountains, and keep it in the family.

Any crazy tour stories?

One time we performed “I Want to Hold Your Hand” on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1963, which is considered to be the beginning of the British Invasion in music. Maybe that was The Beatles. Who can say?

What else is going on in your world?

Keep an eye out for Three Rivers Circus, we out here. We’re constantly trying to put local events together like the pop-up streetwear show we’re throwing in May, and a local music festival we’re putting on in June. We’re all about keeping it local and DIY, so we’re always down for collaborating with those who share that mindset.

What can people expect on Saturday during your set at the Indie Rockfest?

You can expect our set to be a majestic, disco-reviving, Capri Sun-fueled thrill ride. We’re excited to see all the other acts, meet some good people, and support a music scene that deserves recognition.
