Sun Hound's Nostalgia Fuels Their Freeing Music
By:
Emily Plazek - Millaze

This weekend is the 3rd Annual Indie-Rockfest at Cattivo -- and we've gotten the opportunity to sponsor it again by supporting all the participating bands with our MVMT. This gives us the chance to study these killer Pittsburgh indie bands, and Sun Hound is our current fix. From chance Craigslist encounter seemingly like fate to some very eclectic genre-mixing and throwback inspiration of the Monkees and Judy Garland -- you'll enjoy these badass women when you go to the Fest this Saturday.

Let's get to know them a little more:

Who is Sun Hound?

We are keys/drums rock duo Sun Hound and we met on Craigslist! Nicole posted an ad including pretty much everything I (Jess) was looking for in a band at the time. We ended up meeting over a year later and it totally clicked. We played with a guitarist at the time and named the band Sun Hound with inspiration from the ‘Mechanical Hound’ from book Farenhite 451. We thought it was too hardcore of a name for our sound so we changed it to Sun Hound.

What do you love most about being an indie band?

The fact that there is one word to describe the many genres collected within our music, and we don’t have to box in. There is a lot of freedom to that, in writing, booking, performing, etc.

What are some of your struggles as an indie band?

We mesh with and incorporate so many genres into our music, but it can be a struggle to focus. We love all the potential directions we could go in but it is hard to hone in on one thing because we love all the things and all the styles. We are not as linear as most bands; this has its good and its bad. But the thrill is in the struggle on this one.

Any advice for up-and-coming indie bands who admire and want to be like you? What do you wish you knew beforehand that no one told you?

We find ourselves ‘going back to our roots’ after some musical experimentation, and falling in love with what we thought ‘wasn’t good enough’ at the time. Figure out who you truly are as an artist, stick with it, then grow from there. If you’re not sure who you are as an artist, welcome and embrace that journey.

Craziest/funniest tour/concert story?

That one time at Sonny’s I hurled behind my keyboard directly after one of the best performances of our song ‘Shivers.’  That was a good one.

Anything else you want to add?

Nicole is like the #1 Monkees fan. She can tell you anything about the band - she's even gone on tour as friends with Peter Tork, helping with merch and equipment and driving. He tours with her everyday as she has a Tork tattoo. Jessica loves to entertain. Practices are filled with charades, dances, and Judy Garland/Barbra Streisand impressions. We both love to laugh. We both love animals and old fashioned anything. We are both nostalgic to a time before we existed. This all fuels our music.

What can we expect from your set at Indie Rock Fest?

Expect to hear more sound than you may anticipate from a keyboard and drums! We have some new songs we are anxious to share and a few renditions we are looking forward to performing. Just really excited to get to know some of these other bands and jam to some killer sets!

All the links to need to sink into the Sun Hound music world: their website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Bandcamp, Soundcloud.
